Medo Roga(OBESITY)The disease produced by the increased fatty tissue in the body is called as Medo roga.
Even though the digestive power in the stomach is increased, there is reduced digestive power at the tissue level. the conversion of muscle tissue into fatty tissue does not take place properly. According Ayurveda the former tissues are formed from prior tissues- causes excess faulty deposition of fat in the body which causes Medo roga.
Do’s & don’ts:Intake of less quantity of food with solid consistency are advised.
Regular practice of physical activity.
Regular practice of fasting therapy is advised.
Don’t go with foods which are solid, heavy, dry rough in nature like curd, bread, fried or grilled foods, freezed foods.
Strightly day sleep to be avoided.
Etiology: #
The excessive intake of heavy, sweet, cold, oily food, lack of exercise or physical activity, habit of day sleeping, stress or strain free life, fatty tendency in family(hereditary).Pathogenesis: #
Due to etiological factors, there is increase in fatty tissue in the body, which produces obstruction of passages in the body , specially vitiates vata –reaches the abdominal cavity give hyper stimulation to digestive fire, which causes more and quick digestion and absorption of food. as a result of this appetite increases and to satisfy the hunger, the person goes on eating which inturn increases fatty tissue and the vicious circle goes on.Even though the digestive power in the stomach is increased, there is reduced digestive power at the tissue level. the conversion of muscle tissue into fatty tissue does not take place properly. Symptoms: #
Enlargement of abdomen, increased perspiration, lethargy, slight breathlessness followed by reduced working capacity, weakness, excess thirst, drowsiness, excess sleep, increased hunger, bad smell to perspiration, decreased libido, fat depositions in back, buttocks, breasts are seen.Complications: #
The enlargement of abdomen, buttocks, breasts, lethargy, development of serious diseases like prameha-vata rogas which reduces the life expectancy of life.Line of treatment: #
Swedana-sodhana-snehana-swedana-langhana-samanaMedicated enema with drugs of dry, hot substances is advised(lekhana vasti).Do’s & don’ts:Intake of less quantity of food with solid consistency are advised.

Modern view: #
OBESITYThis is the condition in which there is excess accumulation of body fat. It causes mechanical disability, cardio vascular disorders and metabolic disorders like diabetes mellitus, gall stones, gout etc,. it is usually associated with increased levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the body. IT is calculated based on BMI (Body mass index) of the body.
